UK tax calculator FAQs
How much tax will I pay in 2026/27?
You pay no income tax on the first £12,570 (the Personal Allowance), 20% on income from £12,571 to £50,270, 40% from £50,271 to £125,140, and 45% above that. Employees also pay 8% National Insurance on earnings between £12,570 and £50,270 and 2% above. Enter your salary in the calculator above for the exact figure, including Scottish rates and student loan.
What changed in the 2026/27 tax year?
Income tax bands and the Personal Allowance stay frozen until April 2028, so pay rises push more people into higher bands. Dividend tax rose by 2 points to 10.75% (basic) and 35.75% (higher) from 6 April 2026. Student loan thresholds rose to £26,900 (Plan 1), £29,385 (Plan 2) and £33,795 (Plan 4). Scotland widened its Starter and Basic bands. Making Tax Digital for Income Tax became mandatory for sole traders and landlords with income over £50,000.
Is this an HMRC tax calculator?
TapTax is independent of HMRC, but every calculator uses the rates and thresholds HMRC has confirmed for 2026/27, and the same engine files quarterly updates to HMRC through Making Tax Digital. Use it to estimate; your tax code, benefits and other income can change the final figure.
Which calculator should I use if I am self-employed?
Use the sole trader tax calculator for income tax, Class 4 National Insurance and take-home pay on your profits. If you also have a salary, rental income or dividends, the multiple income calculator applies one Personal Allowance across everything and shows the combined bill.
How is take-home pay calculated?
Take-home pay is your gross salary minus income tax, employee National Insurance, any student loan repayment and your own pension contributions. Employer NI (15% above £5,000) is a cost to your employer and does not reduce your pay, but it is shown so you can see the full cost of employing you.
